Morcant is a brother from the Monkwearmouth monastery who can join the adventures when the thegn meets him in Northumbria during Parsley Sage Rosemary Thyme. In case you would like to recruit him, you have to side with the villagers and drive out the marooned merchants from Mercia. If the player characters doesn't have high Sense, he is the only character who can translate the inscription from the stone circle in the Ravine area needed for The Isle of Apples.
In case you side with the Picts during Fort of the Thicket, he will leave the party the first time after the quest is finished while the party stays at the campsite. If you betray the Northumbrians by letting the Northmen invade Eoforwic (York), he will leave the party immediately when the betrayal becomes clear.
In both cases, you will meet later while he desperates defends the cathedral of York from being looted by you and to enter the building, you must either knock him out while passing a medium strength check or kill him with a medium finesse check or simply kill him after he is unwilling to stand aside.
If you have good morale with Morcant and talk to him in Skjern, he is willing to reveal how he became a monk.
Morcant became a monk when his father, who was an influental ealdorman, supported the wrong king and got killed as a result. His mother was left with a simple choice, either let Morcant be killed so no male has a claim on their lands or be left alive by joining a monastic order and lose claims by joining an order.
